Packed week ahead for markets

A stack of data is scheduled for release this week in what could be another volatile period for markets.

The USD continued its dominance on Friday, suppressing paired currencies. The EURUSD opened Friday at $1.19654 and ticked up to a high of $1.19755 in the first hour of the day. A gradual slide set in shortly afterwards, with the euro hitting lows of $1.18921 late in the session. It has come off those lows and is now trading at $1.19288. The GBPUSD began the day at $1.38912 and edged up to a high of $1.39058 early. It fell from those highs and hit a low of $1.37778 heading into late trading. It has bounced off those lows and is now trading at $1.38593.

Indices ended the week with a bang, with positive jobs figures and a finalised stimulus bill putting markets in a buoyant mood. The Dow opened the day at 30,926.12 and slipped to lows of 30,665.38 early. It regained those losses in short order and remained steady for a few hours before taking off during the back half of the day, with the Dow peaking at 31,571.33 and closing at 31,527.14. The positive sentiment has continued into Monday and the index is now trading 31,696.15. The Dax was less predictable on Friday after opening at 13,919.73. The German index dipped to 13,865.46 shortly after the open before rebounding to 14,013.62. It then fell to lows of 13,865.03 mid-session. The Dax rallied off those lows to hit a high of 14,070.04 late and closed at 14,049.10.

The week ahead is full of significant data releases, highlighted by the publication of CPI & Core CPI data from the US on Thursday.

Wednesday – RBA Governor Philip Lowe speaks

Thursday – US CPI, Core CPI and Crude Oil Inventories, European Main Refinancing Rate, ECB Monetary Policy Statement & Press Conference, BoC Overnight Rate, Rate Statement and Press Conference

Friday – UK GDP, German Final CPI, US PPI, Canadian Employment Change and Unemployment Rate
