US data in spotlight

A stack of data is slated for publication today, with attention turning to the US.

The EURUSD made small gains overnight, despite breaking through $1.19. The pair opened the day at $1.17991 and dipped to a low of $1.17975 in the first hour of the session. The euro began its ascent soon after, with the gains accelerating mid-session, peaking at $1.19165. Those gains were largely erased late in the day, with the pair falling as low as $1.18067. It is now trading at $1.18361. The GBPUSD collapsed overnight after opening at $1.30007. The pair was flat early, ticking up to a high of $1.30353 mid-session. it stayed near that level for a few hours before tumbling to lows $1.27718 late in the day. It has come off those lows slightly and is now trading at $1.28081.

It was a disappointing day for indices, giving up a chunk of the gains they made in the previous session. The Dow began the day at 27,957.80 and declined throughout the first half of the day before climbing to a high of 28,178.77. However, a sell-off ensued late in the day, with the Dow slumping to lows of 27,444.76. It has come away from those lows and is now trading at 27,691.30. The Dax again followed the Dow’s lead after opening at 13,274.29. Early trading saw the index edge up to a high of 13,305.96 before beginning its gradual slide. The Dax eventually fell to lows of 13,091.27 in the last hour of the day. It has opened Friday higher and is now trading at 13,180.90.

The day ahead sees the release of a swathe of data, with focus turning to the US and the publication of CPI & Core CPI data. CPI is expected to rise by 0.3%, while Core CPI is tipped to grow by 0.2%.
