A data-dense week coming up

A stack of data is scheduled for publication this week, while a couple of central banks feature on Thursday.

The EURUSD opened Friday at $1.18477 and traded in a tight range early, ticking up to a high of $1.18651 mid-session. The euro fell sharply from those highs, hitting lows of $1.17803 late in the day. However, it bounced off those lows and regained most of those losses, closing at $1.18369. It is now trading at $1.18410. The GBPUSD followed a similar path after beginning the day at $1.32797. The pound was flat early and edged up to a high of $1.33186 mid-session. Like the euro, the pound fell away sharply, hitting a low of $1.31753 late. It rebounded and erased a large portion of the losses, ultimately closing at $1.32811. It has opened the new week lower and is now trading at $1.32525.

Stocks continued its slide on Friday, albeit at a slower pace than the one that traders witnessed during the previous session. The Dow began the day at 28,316.21 and was flat early, nudging up to a high of 28,608.28 mid-session. The index fell from those highs, tumbling to lows of 27,656.13 late in the day. It managed to claw back some of those losses and is now trading at 28,144.30. The Dax had more success than the Dow on Friday, ending the session relatively flat. The German index opened Friday at 12,956.90 and lifted early, eventually peaking at 13,129.17 mid-session. Falling away from those highs, the Dax bottomed-out at 12,742.24 late in the day. It regained some of those losses heading into the close and is now trading at 12,943.50.

The week ahead sees the publication of  swathe of data, while the ECB and BoC both holding interest rate meetings on Thursday. Data published today and the most significant this week include:

Today – China Trade Balance and USD-Denominated Trade Balance, Japanese Leading Indicators, German Industrial Production, Swiss Foreign Currency Reserves, UK Halifax HPI, European Sentix Investor Confidence

Tuesday – European Revised GDP, Australian NAB Business Confidence

Wednesday – China CPI

Thursday – ECB Main Refinancing Rate, Monetary Policy Statement and Press Conference, BoC Overnight Rate and Rate Statement, US Unemployment Claims, PPI and Core PPI

Friday – US CPI, Core CPI and Crude Oil Inventories, Eurogoup Meetings, UK GDP, ECB President Christine Legarde speaks
