Stack of data rounds out the week

April 12, 2019

A busy end to the week as we see the release of a swathe of data from around the world.

The EURUSD opened at $1.12725 and traded in a tight range early, hitting highs of $1.12866 mid-session. The euro began to fall soon after that, eventually falling to lows of $1.12488 late in the day. It has come off those lows and is currently trading at $1.12606. The GBPUSD had any unhappy night, giving up most of the gains it made during the previous session. The pair opened at $1.30840 and climbed to a high of $1.31081 mid-session. Like the euro, the pound fell shortly afterwards, hitting lows of $1.30486 in very late trading. It has come off those lows slightly and is currently trading at $1.30590.

The Dow opened and closed flat but endured some movements in between. The index opened at 26,166.77, ebbing and flowing in early session trading. The Dow then climbed to a high of 26,222.84 late in the day before falling shortly after, bottoming out at 26,058.72. it bounced off those lows and is currently trading at 26,158.50. The Dax endured a wild session overnight, with some big movements made. The German index opened at 11,906.11 and fell to an early low of 11,859.52 before rallying to a high of 11,980.91 just a few hours later. It was unable to hold onto those highs, declining late and closing at 11,944.81.

The day ahead see the publication of plenty of data. The most significant release is the Trade Balance from China. Many smaller economies around the world rely on trade with China to prop up their own economies as China is such a large importer of goods. With the trade wars continuing with the US, it will be interesting to see if that has had any material impact.

Other data released today includes:

All – IMF Meetings

UK – CB Leading Index

Australia – RBA Financial Stability Review

Europe – European Industrial Production

China – USD-Denominated Trade Balance, M2 Money Supply, New Loans

US – Treasury Currency Report, Import Prices, Prelim UoM Consumer Sentiment & Inflation Expectations
