Markets look to US data

November 14, 2018

A swathe of data is being released today, with markets focussing on key US economic figures.

USD-paired currencies bounced back somewhat overnight, overcoming a horrible few days of trading. The EUR/USD opened the day at $1.12155, which was the low of the session. It endured a bumpy ride as it climbed to $1.12566, dipped to $1.12211, rallied over late trading to a high of $1.12932 and then fell back to $1.12512. It mounted one more fightback however, regaining those losses and currently sitting at $1.12878. The GBP/USD opened at $1.28457 and fell to an opening-hour low of $1.28351. From there, the pair surged until peaking at $1.30466 late in the session. It pared back some of those gains, dropping to $1.29423, but it has opened higher this morning and is currently trading at $1.30075.

The Dow continues to struggle after getting belted the day before. The index opened at 25,410.20 and climbed slowly in early trading, hitting a high of 25,572.80 mid-session. It remained flat for a few hours before the slide began, where it fell to a low of 25,187.20. The Dow tried to mount a comeback but that was short lived, as it closed at 25,341.80. The Dax went in the opposite direction, buoyed by news that the UK and the EU are close to striking a Brexit deal. The German index opened at 11,341.98 and dipped to an opening-hour low of 11,324.60. From there, the Dax rallied until it peaked at 11,496.20. It gave up some of those gains late and closed at 11,418.20.

The day ahead is a busy one, with market attention turning to the release of US CPI & Core CPI data. This data is crucial to tracking inflation and consumer demand. The Fed Reserve also use these figures to help them formulate monetary policy settings. Other data published today includes:

UK – CPI & Core CPI, PPI Input & Output, RPI, HPI

Australia – Westpac Consumer Sentiment, Wage Price Index

US – Fed Chair Jerome Powell & FOMC Member Randal Quarles speak

China – Industrial Production, Fixed Asset Investment, Retail Sales, Unemployment Rate
