A look at the week ahead

March 19, 2018

Plenty of significant data set for release from around the world will likely lead to some volatility, and with that, opportunity.

The EUR/USD began the session reasonably flat, gradually climbing to a high of $1.23352. After that however, it dropped off in value as it hit session lows of $1.22584. It managed to recover some of those losses, where it is currently trading at $1.22875. The GBP/USD went on a wilder ride that saw more fluctuations. It climbed slowly, then shot up to session highs of $1.39800 before falling almost a cent to session lows of $1.38888. It then rebounded and regained most of those losses to be trading at $1.39462 now.

The Dow hit session lows of 24,837.36 early beofre ebbing and flowing throughout most of the early session. It was able to add more than 200 points as it hit session highs of 25,040.23. It has retraced some of the gains, currently trading at 24,929.90. The Dax held up well once again. After hitting lows of 12,337.30 early, it rallied in the next hour to peak at 12,458.55. It pulled back from that high to be trading at 12,401.55.

The most significant piece of data coming out this week is the FOMC Federal Funds Rate early Thursday morning. There has been talk of an interest rate increase this week, but it will be vital to find out the finer detail of the Fed Reserve’s decision as well as the outlook for monetary policy for the US. The first speech delivered by new Fed Chair, Jerome Powell, sent the Dow 500 points lower. It will be crucial to listen to the language he uses when delivering the interest rate decision. Data set for release today and the significant releases this week include:

Today – G20 Meetings, BoJ Summary of Opinions, Japanese Trade Balance, UK Rightmove HPI, Italian Industrial Production & Trade Balance, European Trade Balance, German Buba Monthly Report, Australian CB Leading Index, NZ Westpac Consumer Sentiment, Fed Reserve Member Raphael Bostic speaks
