“Super” Mario Draghi to speak, FOMC minutes released

May 24, 2017

A relatively quiet Wednesday, as far as data release goes, but there are still a couple of important events coming up.

Later tonight, ECB President Mario Draghi will be speaking at the first conference on Financial Stability in Madrid. This has been organised by the Bank of Spain. As traders are aware, what “Super” Mario Draghi says is often quite important and can have a major bearing on not only the European economy, but the Euro currency itself. As the head of the central bank, it will be prudent for markets to listen to what he has to say as he is in charge of monetary policy decisions for the continent. As there has also been a strengthening of the Euro lately, it might be worthwhile listening to Draghi to see if he says anything that might make the Euro fluctuate.

The US Fed Reserve will be releasing the minutes from their previous interest rate meeting. Although this is issued “after the fact”, it still contains plenty of significant information. What is also important about the release of these minutes is that traders and markets can review them well after the deadlines about the meeting itself have died down. It gives everyone time to digest the information and the Fed’s outlook for monetary policy going into the future.

As far as announcements go, Europe is publishing GfK German Consumer Confidence and Belgian Business Climate, the US is reporting HPI, Crude Oil Inventories and Existing Home Sales figures, Canada is setting their central bank interest rates.
