A few announcements out of Europe, but FOMC minutes likely to dominate

October 12, 2016

There are a few announcements to come out of Europe today, but it is likely that most interest will be centred on the US Federal Reserves FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) meeting minutes from its previous rate meeting.

The main announcements to come out of Europe include German Wholesale Price Index, French Final CPI and European Industrial Production figures. These are important as it points to general business activity on the continent. The CPI figure is also helpful in determining spending habits of consumers.

But the main focus is likely to be on the release of FOMC meeting minutes from it’s previous rate meeting, released early tomorrow morning. While these minutes don’t usually grab as much headline space, the fact that markets are factoring in a 75% chance of a rate rise in December, people will be looking at these minutes with even more interest. The fact that the US Fed Reserve appears to be hugely divided on whether to raise rates or not, only intensifies the focus on this report.

Elsewhere, UK MPC (Monetary Policy Committee) member Jon Cunliffe, US FOMC member William Dudley and FOMC member Esther George are all speaking at different engagements. Whilst these may not be interest rate meetings, it may offer some insights into the individual’s line of thinking when it comes to their respective economies and interest rates into the future.
