Busy week coming up for markets

There is a stack of important data that is being published this week, while central bank figures also feature.

The EURUSD was reasonably flat on Friday after beginning the day at $1.18469. It traded in a tight range, slipping to lows of $1.18250 late in the day before leaping up to a high of $1.18702 in the same hour. It has come away from those highs slightly and is now trading at $1.18573. The GBPUSD ended Friday lower after a promising start to the day. The pair opened at $1.29729 and dipped early, before climbing to a high of $1.29989 mid-session. The back half of the day saw the pound fall to lows of $1.29123 late. It has come off those lows and is now trading at $1.29488.

A sell-off late on Friday saw the Dow give up gains it made in recent days. The index began the day at 27,890.54 and quickly jumped to a high of 27,998.07. Those gains were given up in short order and it traded between 27,830 and 27,940 for a large chunk of the session. Late trading saw the sell-off begin in earnest, with the Dow slumping to lows of 27,486.80. It bounced off those lows in the dying hours of the day and that positive momentum has continued into early Monday trading. It is now sitting at 27,745.95. The Dax was once again weighed down by the Dow as it was unable to hold on to earlier gains. The German index opened the day at 13,240.99 and dropped 40 points early before edging up to a high of 13,262.06 mid-session. The sell-off started shortly afterwards, with the Dax falling to lows of 13,052.19. It has come away from those lows and is now trading at 13,133.70.

The week ahead sees the publication of plenty of significant data, while Fed Chair Jerome Powell and Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin also feature.

Thursday – US Unemployment Claims, SNB Policy Rate and Monetary Policy Assessment

Friday – US Durable & Core Durable Goods Orders, Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin and Fed Chair Jerome Powell speak
