RBA meeting looms

A busy Tuesday coming up, with a stack of data scheduled for release.

The EURUSD made a modest start to the week after opening at $1.18973. Following a steady start, the euro dipped to lows of $1.18828 mid-session. It climbed off those lows, peaking at a high of $1.19652 heading into late trading. It has come away from those highs slightly and is now trading at $1.19497. The GBPUSD started the week at $1.33312 and traded in a tight rage early, slipping to lows of $1.33001. It remained near those levels for a few hours before shooting up to a high of $1.33952 late. It has retreated from those highs and is now trading at $1.33656.

The Dow got off to a shaky start to the week, giving up gains it made late last week. The index began Monday at 28,717.37 and climbed quickly to a high of 28,817.11. It remained near that high for a few hours before heading south for most of the session, hitting lows of 28,369.18 late in the day. It has come off those lows and is now trading at 28,443.30. The Dax was ultimately dragged down by the Dow after opening the week at 13,112.70. The German index lifted to a high of 13,151.15 early before falling away soon after. The losses piled up, culminating in the Dax hitting a low of 12,898.36 late in the day. It has bounced off those lows and is now trading at 12,970.30.

The day ahead sees the release of a host of data, with Australia’s central bank coming into focus. The RBA wraps up its latest interest rate meeting today. While rates are tipped to remain on hold, markets will be looking at the RBA governor’s comments at the conclusion of the meeting to see if the central bank intends to change any other monetary policy settings as the country continues to limp through virus-enforced lockdowns.
