Markets await UK inflation

A smorgasbord of data is scheduled for publication later today, with focus shifting to the UK.

The euro’s woes roll on as it fell below $1.08 overnight. The EURUSD started the day at $1.08344 and nudged up to a high of $1.08366 in the opening hour of day. It fell slightly and remained steady for several hours before falling away to lows of $1.07848 late in the day. It is not far off those lows, currently trading at $1.07913. The GBPUSD opened and closed flat but there were some movements throughout the day. The pair began the day at $1.30019 and slid in early trading, hitting lows of $1.29700 mid-session. It rallied off those lows to peak at $1.30483 a couple of hours later. Those highs did not last for long as the pound declined over late trading. It is now trading at $1.29967.

The Dow did not enjoy a positive return from the President’s Day public holiday, losing ground for most of the session. The index opened at 29,372.50, which started the day almost 100 points lower than its previous close, ticked up to an opening-hour high of 29,386.64. It was downhill from there as the Dow dropped to lows of 29,112.38 late in the day. It managed to bounce off those lows and in early Wednesday trading, it is sitting at 29,259.50. The Dax suffered under the weight of falling Dow, closing the day in negative territory. The German index opened the day at 13,739.32 and edged up to a high of 13,752.82 in the first hour of trade. It dropped over the following hours to bottom-out at 13,655.26 mid-session before regaining some of those losses to close at 13,700.00.

Attention turns to the UK where is will be publishing few pieces of economic data. The most significant data being released is the CPI figure, which is expected to show an annualised growth of 1.7%, up from 1.3% recorded the previous month.
