RBA minutes eyed

December 17, 2019

Plenty of data is being published today, with traders looking to minutes being released by Australia’s central bank.

Currencies were largely flat overnight, taking a breather from the large movements seen on Friday. The EURUSD opened the week at $1.11236 and dipped to lows of $1.11217 shortly afterwards. The euro spent a large change of the session edging up, hitting a high of $1.11576 late in the day. It has come off those highs slightly and is currently trading at $1.11455. The GBPUSD opened and closed flat after beginning the week at $1.33336. The pair climbed early, peaking at $1.34217 mid-session before falling away over the back half of the day. The pound bottomed-out at $1.33180 late in the day and is now trading at $1.33256.

Indices made some solid gains to start the week, with the Dow and Dax leading the charge. The Dow began the week at 28,178.05 and remained flat early, slipping to lows of 28,147.90. Mid-session trading saw the Dow begin its ascendancy, where it peaked at 28,335.68. Lat trading saw the index give up some of those gains, closing at 28,221.50. The Dax opened the week at 13,324.31 and slid to lows of 13,321.16 shortly after the open. The German index climbed off those lows, eventually heading to a high of 13,429.61 before closing at 13,404.69.

Focus today centres around the publication of the latest RBA Meeting Minutes. This will give traders a more in-depth insight into the decision-making process of Australia’s central bank. After the publication of the mid-year budget update yesterday, these minutes may give further clues as to the direction of monetary policy settings in the context of a deteriorating budget position.
