US data in focus

A busy day coming up for markets, with a stack of information scheduled for publication.

The EURUSD opened and closed flat but there were some movements in between. The pair opened the day at $1.10264 and climbed in early trading to a high of $1.10454. It fell from those highs mid-session, hitting lows of $1.09905. However, it surged off those lows and in the next hour, it reached a near-session high of $1.10441. It has come off those highs slightly and is now trading at $1.10333. The GBPUSD continued it remarkable run of late, surging another two cents overnight. The pair opened at $1.26075 and dipped to lows of $1.25993 in the opening hour of trade. The pound traded in a tight range throughout early and mid-session before rallying late in the day to peak at $1.27993. It has come off those highs and is now trading at $1.27638.

The Dow performed strongly overnight, on the back of strong earnings data from US companies. The index began the day at lows of 26,803.13 and climbed steadily during the first half of the day. Late-session trading saw the Dow rally to highs of 27,130.00. It gave up some of those gains over the final few hours of the session and is currently trading at 27,036.12. The Dax continues to impress, making solid gains overnight. The German index started the day at 12,485.66 and dipped to lows of 12,478.55 shortly after the open. It spent the rest of the day gaining in value, where it peaked at 12,683.73 late in the day before closing at 12,632.66.

The day ahead is packed with data, with attention turning to the US. The US will be publishing all-important Retail & Core Retail Sales figures later tonight. Markets are expecting to see growth in the Retail Sales figure of 0.3% (down from 0.4% from the previous reading), while the Core Retail figure is expected to show growth of 0.2% (up from 0% at last reading).
