Data-packed week lies ahead

A whole swathe of data is expected to be published this week, which could bring with it some volatility.

The EURUSD made some small gains on Friday after starting the day at $1.10047. The pair lifting slightly in early trading before dipping to a low of $1.10000 mid-session. It rallied off those lows to peak at $1.10622 a few hours later. It came off those highs late in the day and is currently trading at $1.10342. The GBPUSD continues its remarkable resurgence on the back of positive Brexit news. The pair opened at $1.24285 and traded flat early, dipping to lows of $1.24057 mid-session. The pound surged three cents off those lows, powering its way to a high of $1.27066. It has come off those highs and is now trading at $1.26403.

The Dow rallied on the back on a small breakthrough in trade talks between the US and China. The index opened at 26,603.50 and dipped to lows of 26,541.46 shortly after the open. the gains began not long after, with the gains picking up momentum mid-session. The Dow peaked at 27,021.80 late in the day before a sharp drop saw it close at 26,817.96. It is now trading at 26,888.75. The Dax made some strong gains on Friday, helped along by a rallying Dow. The German index opened the day at a low of 12,160.35 and basically climbed for the rest of the day. The Dax peaked at 12,521.51 before closing at 12,462.48.

The week ahead is packed with data, with several pieces of significant data to be published throughout. Events away from economic data will also play a role in market direction this week. Trade talks between the US and China continue, as Brexit negotiations.

Wednesday – US Retail & Core Retail Sales, UK CPI, Canadian & NZ CPIs

Thursday – UK Retail Sales, Australian Employment Change & Unemployment Rate, US Philly Fed Manufacturing Index, BoE Governor Mark Carney speaks

Friday – China GDP, US Crude Oil Inventories
