Australian jobs data in focus

Plenty of market-moving data about today, with interest taking on a local flavour.

The EURUSD made some modest gains overnight, trying to pick itself up off the canvas after being hammered by a strengthening USD. The pair started the day at $1.12088 and remained flat early, before dipping to a low of $1.11991. The euro bounced off those lows and climbed to a high of $1.12330 late in the day. It has come off those highs slightly and is currently trading at $1.12275. The GBPUSD followed a similar path to the euro after beginning the day at $1.24057. After lifting slightly, the pair dropped to lows of $1.23806 heading into mid-session trading. The pound recovered however, marching to a high of$1.24555 late in the day. The pound has fallen away from those highs and is currently trading at $1.24315.

The Dow looked set for another steady session, until a sell-off in the back half of the day put it into negative territory. The index opened the day at 27,344.84 and made some modest gains, peaking at 27,405.35. It didn’t stay there for long heading south for the rest of the session, eventually falling to a low of 27,214.18. The Dow has opened lower again and is now trading at 27,177.14. The Dax got off to a promising start before being dragged down by the Dow. The German index opened the session at 12,409.18 and climbed to an early high of 12,450.35 before the rot set in. The Dax fell sharply for most of the day, closing at a low of 12,302.75.

There’s some significant economic data scheduled for release today, with attention turning to Australia. Australia will be publishing Employment Change and Unemployment Rate figure in a few hours – data that usually causes movements in local markets. The country is expected to add 9,100 jobs for the month, down from 42,300 at the last reading, while the jobless rate is expected to remain steady at 5.2%.
