Big week ahead for data

A smorgasbord of data being released throughout the week should ensure markets see some volatility.

The EURUSD climbed back above $1.13 on Friday in an otherwise strong session. The pair opened at a low of $1.12500 and rallied throughout most of the session, peaking at $1.13232 late in the day. It came off those highs but is still managing to stay above $1.13, currently trading at $1.1320. The GBPUSD looked set for a great session until a fall late in the day saw it erase most of its earlier gains. The pair opened at $1.30515 and climbed to $1.30801 early before falling to a low of $1.30492. The pound bounced off those lows as it surged to a high of $1.31317 late in the day. It gave up most of those gains going into the close, closing at $1.30620. It has had a positive start to the week and is currently trading at $1.30884.

The Dow went off to the races on Friday, shaking off a flat few days of trading. The index opened at 26,150.87 and dipped to a low of 26.139.78 in the opening hour. The Dow was rather flat in early trading before taking off mid-session, rallying to a high of 26,441.20. It remained near those levels for the rest of the session and is currently trading at 26,420.00. The Dax enjoyed a strong session on Friday, helped along by a surging Dow. The German index opened at 11,958.87 and fell to an early low of 11,903.91, before rallying 100 points in the next hour. It continued to climb until it hit a high of 12,047.56. It came of those highs but managed to stay above 12,000, closing at 12,027.99.

The week ahead is packed with data, with plenty of market-moving data set for release, with the most significant being the US Retail & Core Retail Sales, UK CPI and China GDP. Data released today and the most significant this week includes:

Today – BoC Business Outlook Survey, Swiss PPI, German Buba Monthly Report, US Empire State Manufacturing Index, FOMC Member Charles Evans speaks

Tuesday – UK Average Earnings Index, Australian Monetary Policy Meeting Minutes

Wednesday – UK CPI, China GDP, NZ CPI, Canadian CPI & Trade Balance, OPEC Meetings, BoE Governor Mark Carney speaks

Thursday – Australian Employment Change & Unemployment Rate, US Retail & Core Retail Sales, Canadian Core Retail Sales, UK Retail Sales, German & French Flash Manufacturing and Services PMIs

Friday – US Building Permits, Australian NZ, Swiss, German, UK and Canadian Bank Holidays
