Data deluge coming up this week

A smorgasbord of data set for release this week should ensure some volatility throughout.

Major currencies put in a strong showing on Friday, strengthening over the USD. The EUR/USD opened the session at $1.16885 and fell to lows of $1.16788 a short time later. The pair then rallied strongly for most of the session, eventually hitting highs of $1.17676. It pulled back off those highs and in early morning trading, it currently sits at $1.17477. The GBP/USD followed a similar pattern after opening at $1.32025. The pair hit lows of $1.31998 during the first hour of trade but took off after that. The pair posted strong gains, where it reached a high of $1.32936 in the last hour of trade. It closed at $1.32847. It opened this morning much higher than its Friday closing price, opening at $1.33163. It has pulled back since then, currently trading $1.32932.

It was another bumpy ride for the Dow on Friday. The Dow opened at 24,329.72 and climbed to 24,433.73 before giving up all of those gains. The Dow hit lows of 24,250.43 during mid-session trading. It then performed an about-face and rallied until it reached highs of 24,517.38. It is currently trading at 24,514.75. The Dax opened at 12,531.62 and reached highs of 12,554.30 in the first hour of trade. The Dax weakened after that high, dropping to lows of 12,424.40 midway through the session. It was able to regain a chunk of those losses as it closed at 12.506.90.

The week ahead is packed full of data, with some announcements sure to cause some volatility. The data released today and the most significant releases for the rest of the week include:

Today – ECB President Mario Draghi, BoJ Governor Haruhiko Kuroda and MPC Member Ben Broadbent speak, Japanese Economy Watchers Sentiment, German Trade Balance, Swiss Unemployment Rate, European Sentix Investor Confidence, US Consumer Credit, UK BRC Retail Sales Monitor

Tuesday – ECB President Mario Draghi speaks, UK GDP & Manufacturing Production

Wednesday – ECB President Mario Draghi & BoE Governor Mark Carney speak, BoC Overnight Rate, Rate Statement, Monetary Policy Report and Press Conference, US Crude Oil Inventories

Thursday – ECB Monetary Policy Meeting Accounts, US CPI & Core CPI

Friday – China Trade Balance
