Macron wins election, quiet night for announcements

May 8, 2017

A quiet night ahead for markets as far as announcements go, as Europe digests the French election result.

The French election has been run and won by favourite Emmanuel Macron. After a fierce campaign and what was touted as a close race, Macron won the election quite convincingly, securing over 65% of the vote. This win is seen as a huge win for the EU as he is pro-EU, as opposed to Marine Le Pen, who floated the idea of holding a referendum on EU membership. Attention now turns to Macon’s policies and what the new administration means for France and Europe.

Turning to market announcements, there are still a few pieces of data set for release. This includes: Trade Balance & USD-Denominated Trade Balance from China, Building Approvals, NAB Business Climate & ANZ Job Advertisements from Australia, Japanese Consumer Confidence, UK Halifax HPI, German Factory Orders & Sentix Investor Confidence from Europe, Canadian Housing Starts and finally, US Labour Market Conditions Index.
