US headlines announcements, key speakers eyed

February 9, 2017

A rather busy night/morning ahead for markets, with both announcements and key speakers addressing different events.

The main source for announcements once again comes from the US. In the early hours of tomorrow morning, the US is releasing a few pieces of data. This includes: Unemployment Claims, Final Wholesale Inventories and Natural Gas Storage. The Unemployment Claims is a weekly figure of people who are applying for unemployment insurance. As it is a weekly figure, it can be more volatile, but it is still useful information as it helps provide traders with data regarding the jobs market. The US economy is still adjusting to the Trump administration, so figures such as these can help us determine which direction the economy is heading. Wholesale Inventories data denotes the change in the total value of goods held in inventory by wholesalers.

Elsewhere around the world, Europe is releasing German Trade Balance and Swiss Unemployment Rate, while Canada is publishing NHPI figures.

There are also quite a few speakers featuring later tonight and tomorrow morning. These are all central bank members in their respective countries. What they say is usually considered quite important as they are all involved in setting monetary policy for those countries. Among the people due to speak are: RBA Reserve Bank of Australia) Governor Philip Lowe, BOC Bank of Canada) Deputy Governor Lawrence Schembri, Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago President Charles Evans and BOE (Bank of England) Governor Mark Carney.
