Bank of Japan policy announcement, Draghi & Trump all dominate headlines

January 31, 2017

It’s quite a busy day for markets, with a number of events and announcements that could move markets.

The first of these major events is the BoJ Monetary Policy meeting. There hasn’t been a lot of talk of a change in monetary policy, but with events that have unfolded around the world in the last week or so, coupled with Japan’s prolonged anaemic growth and inflation, it may end up being a case of when, not if, the central bank moves again. With market confidence now looking shaky and America withdrawing from the TPP, the BoJ may look to ease monetary policy in the future as more of a pre-emptive move.

Later tonight, ECB President Mario Draghi is set to speak at a joint conference between the European Central Bank and the European Commission. It is always important to listen to speeches made by Draghi as he is the head of the central bank of Europe and his opinions and policy decisions affect not only the member states, but the 500 million + people within its borders.

It is important to keep in mind is the effect that Donald Trump is having on world markets. It seems like a rolling headline in which Trump is constantly featuring in. Every stroke of a pen and every executive order signed seems to be causing some sort of controversy. It might worthy to note, in among his more controversial and headline grabbing executive orders, Trump has also signed an executive order to cut regulations for small businesses. While little detail was given, this process of regulation cutbacks will probably continue in the background, without much fanfare. Regulation cutbacks is seen as business friendly and will be seen as a positive for markets.

As far as announcements go, there are quite a few, but they will seemingly take a backseat to world events.

Out of Europe, a whole host of announcements are being made. They include: French Prelim GDP, French Consumer Spending, French Prelim CPI, German Retail Sales, German Unemployment Change, Italian Monthly Unemployment Rate, European CPI & Core CPI Flash Estimate, European Flash GDP and European Unemployment Rate. The UK is releasing Net Lending to Individuals, M4 Money Supply and Mortgage Approvals data. Canada is publishing it’s GDP, RMPI and IPPI figures. The US is communicating data including Employment Cost Index, S&P/CS Composite-20 HPI, Chicago PMI and CB Consumer Confidence. Finally, Japan is releasing Housing Starts data.
